Paeonia suffruticosa, also known as Tree Peony or Moutan Peony, is a breathtakingly beautiful species of peony native to China. Its dramatic purplish, rose pink, or white flowers can grow up to 6 inches or more in diameter. This deciduous shrub prefers a warm position with rich soil and likes limestone. It is also the parent of many cultivars. In Chinese culture, Paeonia suffruticosa is an important symbol and is known as "mǔdān". The fallen flower petals of this plant are a delicacy when parboiled and sweetened, or they can be used in dishes. In addition to being edible, it also has medicinal properties. The root and root bark have analgesic, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, antispasmodic, emmenagogue, sedative, styptic and tonic properties. This truly magnificent plant is not only a sight to behold but also has cultural, edible, and medicinal significance.
