Physical Characteristics
: PERENNIAL growing to 0.3 m (1ft). It is hardy to zone 5. It is in flower from May to June. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Wind. The plant prefers light (sandy) and medium (loamy) soils, requires well-drained soil and can grow in nutritionally poor soil.The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. and can grow in very alkaline soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade.It requires dry or moist soil and can tolerate drought.

It is a perennial plant sometimes found in acidic bogs , for example in the Portlethen Moss , Scotland and mountain pasture, throughout Europe (with the exception of some Mediterranean areas ) and eastwards across much of Asia; it has also been introduced to North America. It is sometimes used as a drought-tolerant lawn grass. Sheep's fescue is a densely tufted perennial grass. Its greyish green leaves are short and bristle-like. The panicles are both slightly feathery and a bit one-sided. It flowers from May until June, and is wind pollinated.
