Little bluestem is a perennial bunchgrass , and is prominent in tallgrass prairie , along with big bluestem ( Andropogon gerardii ), indiangrass ( Sorghastrum nutans ) and switchgrass ( Panicum virgatum ). It is a warm-season species, meaning it employs the C4 photosynthetic pathway.
