Arbutus unedo, also known as the Strawberry Madrone or Strawberry Tree, is an evergreen shrub or small tree that grows up to 50 ft tall, with glossy dark green serrated leaves and bell-shaped white or pale pink flowers that bloom in autumn. The fruit, which is about 15mm in diameter, has a lush tropical texture and a delicate flavor, containing about 20% sugars. It is ripe in November/December and makes delicious jams and preserves. Despite its name, Arbutus unedo is not the source of the common strawberry. The plant is adaptable to many climates and is fairly drought, frost, shade and salt tolerant, making it easy to cultivate. It is also a valued ornamental plant, and its ecosystem benefits include being a source of nectar and pollen for bees, food for birds, a good choice for wind barriers and fire resistant. The leaves have medicinal properties and are a source of antioxidants. Consider adding Arbutus unedo to your garden for its ornamental and practical benefits.
