Clematis vitalba, also known as White virgin's-bower, Old-man's Beard or Traveller’s Joy, originates from North Africa and Europe, and occasionally found in parts of North America, this charming climbing shrub flaunts its white flowers in scented sprays during late summer. Its branched and grooved stems, accompanied by the unique "old man's beard" aesthetic due to the presence of numerous long silky appendages, make it a unique addition to any garden.
Thriving best in a moist climate with warm summers, Clematis vitalba prefers alkaline rich soils. Despite its rapid growth, outpacing even the English ivy, this plant maintains a high resistance against mild deer browsing. However, it is prudent to consider its tendency to be invasive due to its vitality, rapid growth and highly-effective disseminatory reproductive system, which can produce more than 100,000 seeds from a single plant.
