Experience the beauty and resilience of Pinus cembra, also known as the Swiss Pine, Swiss Stone Pine, Arolla Pine, Austrian Stone Pine or simply Stone Pine. Native to the Alps and Carpathian Mountains of central Europe, spreading through Poland, Switzerland, France, Italy, Austria, Germany, Slovenia, Slovakia, Ukraine and Romania, this magnificent pine tree stands up to 90-120 ft in height with a trunk diameter of 4.5 ft. Thriving particularly on north facing slopes and heavy clay soils, this very hardy plant tolerates extremely cold temperatures down to -22°F. Its distinguishing features include long-lasting shiny dark green needles, slow growth and an ability to reach an age between 500 and 1000 years. Possessing strong resistance to white pine blister rust, it holds great value for developing rust resistance in other species. More than its decorative uses in parks and gardens and its harvested seeds sold as pine nuts, the Pinus Cembra is also instrumental in high-altitude afforestation projects, where it aids in minimizing avalanches and soil erosion.
