Introducing Juglans regia 'Carpathian', a strain of English walnut with greater cold hardiness for colder climates. This large deciduous tree grows up to 65 ft tall with a broad crown and requires full sun to thrive. Not only does it produce thin-shelled, edible nuts, but it also yields a valuable timber that is heavy, hard, and close-grained. The green husks of this tree contain methyl palmitate, which has insecticidal properties, making it an eco-friendly insecticide. Additionally, the green nuts and leaves make a yellow dye while the mature husks and leaves produce a brown dye without a mordant, making it perfect for use as a natural hair coloring and tonic. The catkins also produce a golden-brown dye for use in various applications. The seeds provide a drying oil that is useful in soap making and paint preparation while the nut kernels can be used as a wood polish. With its many versatile uses, this tree is a must-have for any nature lover and a great addition to any garden or outdoor space.
