Scarification: Soak in water, let stand in water for 24 hours

Recognised for its unique bark featuring shiny stripes down its trunk, it's truly a sight to behold. Perfect for those tough conditions, this stalwart of the forest is tolerant of drought, dry soil, black walnut and even air pollution. Its preference is a deep fertile loam soil, yet it can adapt and thrive in various soils and locations. The Northern Red Oak is a swift-grower, not hesitating to reach 15-20 feet within its first decade. This makes it an ideal choice for those keen to see quick results. The attractive reddish-brown wood is appreciated in furniture making and construction due to its strength and coarse grain. An asset to any environment, it also provides nourishment to wildlife including deer, squirrels and birds, despite its slightly bitter tasting acorns. Impressively resilient, its root suckers allow regeneration after forest fire damage. For best results, they should be planted young in their permanent spots, as root disturbance can be detrimental.
